What a group adds
You learn from other people's mistakes too.
In a group you hear French spoken by people whose first language is not yours: a Brazilian, a Korean, a Swede, each making different errors and each rephrasing in a different way. Understanding accented French is a skill of its own, and it is the one that fails first in a real office.
A group also has a rhythm you cannot negotiate with, which is an advantage for anyone who has ever quietly let a private lesson slide. And it costs less per hour, which is why many people combine a weekly group class with private sessions before a specific deadline.
Practical
How groups are formed.
- By level, from the assessment, so nobody spends the term either lost or bored.
- Small enough that everyone speaks in every session. A group where you can hide is not a group that teaches you anything.
- In a centre or online, with the same method either way.
- Adults only. Courses for children and teenagers are handled separately, on the French-language site.
French group classes: common questions
- How large are the groups?
- Small, and deliberately so: everyone has to speak in every session. The exact size depends on the centre and the level, and it is one of the things a centre will tell you before you commit.
- What if my level does not match the group?
- Tell the trainer early. Groups are formed from the level assessment, but people move at different speeds, and moving to another group mid-course is a normal thing to do rather than an admission of failure.
- Can I combine group classes with private lessons?
- Yes, and it is a common arrangement: a weekly group for exposure and regularity, private sessions before a specific deadline such as a presentation or an interview.
- When do group classes start?
- Groups open as levels come together, so the answer depends on the centre and on your level. Ask the centre nearest to you, or send us a message and we will find out for you.
